Memorial Biography

Mary Ann (Cyphers) Bates, AKA NANE, another one of Gods Angels called home on January 30, 2021 at her residence in Compton where she was surrounded by family and friends. She was born September 4, 1955, in Los Angeles, Ca the daughter of Curtis C. Cyphers and Zora B Smith. Mary was the eldest girl from both sides of her parents. Mary has lived in Compton all her life. She went to school in Compton, was married in Compton, lived in Compton, met one of her best friends of over 50-years, Lydia Price, in Compton and raised her kids in Compton. Mary graduated from Compton Senior High School, Class of 1973, where she was a Varsity Cheerleader that could move like know other. COMPTON WAS ALL SHE KNEW! In 1977, Mary married her High School Sweetheart (Raymond Bates) and to their union came four beautiful daughters. As a hobby, Mary was a professional “ROBOT DANCER” for family and friends. Mary had many interests; from spending quality time with her family, shopping, sewing, watching her beloved Lakers “KOBE”, and cooking, especial French fries, emphasize on French Fries. Mary worked at Bank of America, Rockwell International and Edison Energy. During that time, she met two of her lifelong friends Renee Albert and Sheree Anderson. In 1995, Mary gave birth to her one and only son, Marquis Cordale Lomax. After working for many years, Mary decided to step out on faith and open up her own Business, The Bates Family Daycare, which lead her in becoming an amazing foster parent for over the past 20 years. Mary has lived on Caswell for over 40 years and her house, was the party house. She had this warm and inviting spirit that was so contagious, everyone she met fell in love with her. From her smile, to her personality, her laughter, her demeanor on how she carried herself, to opening her doors to take care of others. Mary will always be an Angel sent from heaven. She was predeceased in death by her mother Zora B Smith, her father Curtis Cyphers and two sisters, LaWanda Spates and Diva Parker. Mary leaves to cherish her memory, her four daughters and one son, Kinshineua Kelley and her husband, Charles “Chuck” of Long Beach; Colette Bates and fiancé Brian Smith of Atlanta, GA; Raynisha Bates and Tamera Bates of Compton; Son, Marquis Lomax of Irving, TX; four grandchildren, Angel Barnett, India Kelley, Omari Bates, Zaire Kelley; Bonus Child, Trinity Wilson; three sisters. Sandra Cyphers of Texas; Robin Landers of Los Angeles; Kezia Parker of Compton; five brothers, Edwin C. Cyphers Sr. of Austin TX; Andrew Cyphers and his wife Pam of Riverside, Ca; Michael Cyphers and his wife Carnetta of Carson, Ca; Mario Cyphers and Jamie Edwards, three friends of over 50 years Lydia Price, Renee Albert, Sheree Anderson and many nieces and nephews.
